Harvard faculty divided over deep PhD cuts as school battles $365 million deficit

Harvard's Faculty of Arts and Sciences is implementing drastic Ph.D. admission cuts, ranging from 50% to 75% across disciplines, due to a significant structural deficit. These reductions, described as "massive and savage" by former President Summers, are raising concerns about academic fabric and undergraduate education, despite faculty understanding of fiscal necessity.
