Centre forms panel to probe student suicides at IIT Kanpur, seeks mental health reforms nationwide

The Centre has set up a three-member committee to examine student suicides at IIT Kanpur and propose measures to strengthen mental health support across higher education institutions. Headed by Anil Sahastrabuddhe, the panel will review institutional mechanisms, counselling access and early intervention systems, and submit its report within 15 days. The move follows data showing 65 student suicides across IITs over five years, including nine at IIT Kanpur in two years.
