NJ Senate bill could force hundreds of school district mergers without parental votes

A New Jersey Senate bill, S4861, could merge hundreds of school districts without requiring parental approval. Proposed by State Sen. Vin Gopal, the legislation targets districts with fewer than 500 students and could expand regional schools. Teachers’ unions and administrators have raised concerns over hidden costs and community impact. Previous consolidation efforts have had mixed results. The bill has not yet been voted on and would require approval from both the Senate and Assembly.
